Tips for Staying Active and Engaged as a Family

Practical hints for making the most of family time from the Florida Consortium of Public Charter Schools (FCPCS) and Parents for Charter Schools
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (April 30, 2020) – Two organizations with a history of leading Florida's charter school movement today released a list of "Tips for Staying Active and Engaged as a Family."  The practical hints are designed to help children and their parents make the most of time spent together during the COVID-19 health crisis.
The Florida Consortium of Public Charter Schools (FCPCS) and Parents for Charter Schools produced the list to help children and their parents maximize the value of unscheduled time together.
The tips are:
- Play card and board games, with a special focus on educational games.
- Cook and bake together; talk about math as you prepare the recipe.
- Do arts and crafts projects together.
- Sort through bookshelves.  Make a pile to donate.
- Make a game of cleaning out kids' drawers and closets.
- Plant a children's garden and incorporate science and math skills.
- Visit the Smithsonian National Zoo's Panda Cam, where you can watch giant pandas Tian Tian and Mei Xiang.
- Create a photo book of your distance learning experiences.  Let kids write the photo descriptions.
- Get moving; have a dance party, do fitness activities and play in the yard.
- Write stories and poetry and read them aloud, with lots of encouraging applause.
- Write letters to family members you cannot visit right now.
- Send cheerful kid-made cards to a local senior center.
- Eat healthy meals, exercise and get adequate sleep to stay physically and emotionally healthy.
"With the cancellation of school classes, sports, play dates, birthday parties and sleep overs, family calendars are likely to be wide open," said FCPCS President Robert Haag.  "This is a great time for families to reengage and enjoy being together at home."
